Frequently Asked Questions

What time do I have to stop eating/drinking for fasting bloodwork? Can I drink water?

For fasting bloodwork, you cannot have anything to eat or drink (not even black coffee/tea) 8-10 hours before your blood test.

You MAY have water.

Do I need to stop my vitamins, thyroid, blood pressure or cholesterol medications prior to having my bloodwork drawn?

No, take all your medications as directed.

How early do I need to do my bloodwork in order for my doctor to have the results for my office visit?

Please have you bloodwork drawn at least 1 week before your office visit.

When should I do my bloodwork if I am on digoxin, seizure medication or an antidepressant?

Blood tests are best done prior to your next dose or at least 6 hours after your last dose.

Can I pre-book my lab appointment for fasting bloodwork?

Yes, for fasting bloodwork only. Contact the lab at 905-845-4511 ext 224 to pre-book your appointment.   A pre-booked appointment is not necessary but, if you would like one, call the lab and leave a message with the date you would like to come in. You will receive a telephone confirmation of your appointment.

Is there anything I should avoid doing prior to having my bloodwork drawn?

If possible, avoid smoking, chewing gum or exercising prior to having your bloodwork as these activities may stimulate the digestive system and alter your test results.
